Statement:
I began quilting as a teenager over thirty-five years ago, and since then have made hundreds of quilts. I grew up in a quilting family, and my mother, in her eighties, still maintains a small business making hand-made quilts. My first quilt was a simple one-patch made from store-bought quarter yards, each cut from the bolt (long before fat quarters). This quilt went with me to college and my first apartment, and as it aged, it became a picnic spread, then a dog bed, and finally I buried my dog in it. At college I made quilts from fabrics that I had batiked while studying printmaking in art school.

After moving to New York City in 1978, I began to create rag quilts, incorporating second-hand and found materials. By 1981, I had a comfortable studio in Hoboken, New Jersey, and although I called myself a painter in those days, I began silk-screening and stenciling fabrics for quilts and table linens. For the past twenty years, since moving to the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, I have created utilitarian and art quilts from my own dyed and hand-painted fabrics.

Quilts have always had their season in my life. I quilt because I can, and because I always have. For me, it is simply a necessary skill for living. And it feels good.
