Statement
Inscriptions in and of
the earth are prehistoric, pre-human. The animal is
one more "landscape" which emerges and perishes,
leaving traces of its unconscious character within the
earth's crust. Human and animal forms become eroded
and fragmented revelations. The fossil keeps alive the
mystery play of past ages.
The ancient contrast between the active and contemplative
life is the canonical point of this series. I mean to
portray life by the hint, the trace. Archeological impressions
as to their formation pose questions of an image.
Is it being formed or in the process of disintegration?
Is it both generating and de-generating, shaping yet
regressing into shapelessness?
This is a subject that cannot be fabricated by conceits,
but may condescend now and then.
It is this coincidence of pastel and conte with the
sentiments, which I inscribe upon paper.
