Rimer Cardillo, Unique Works on Paper

Chace-Randall Gallery proudly presents new works by Rimer Cardillo, Jun 25 – Aug 8.
The Opening Reception is Saturday, Jun 26, 5 - 7 p.m.

A world renowned printmaker and installation artist, Rimer Cardillo’s celebrates the ancient art of the woodcut, often fusing it with modern photographic technology. The imagery is of his Hudson Valley pond and estancias of South America—fusing the natural world of his home in the United States with his native Uruguay. We see images of wheel barrows and hay in the form of the cupi, literally ant hill, of South America. The dogs on the estancia are Cimarrones, a mixed breed of wild Uruguayan dog and European domesticated ones. The political is ever present, as Cardillo is acutely aware of the demise of native peoples and animals in his homeland.

This particular exhibition also includes the World Premier of Mr. Cardillo’s View from La Loggia series, gorgeous intaglio works on paper, all imagery of Tuscany. These hillsides were captured by Cardillo in a sketch book, while working with a Tuscan foundry, forging his carapace series of sculpture. The drawings were then enlarged, etched in wood, and printed on lush cotton paper in a series of unique set proofs. His Sunflower Carapace, cast aluminum, is also on exhibit at Chace-Randall.

Rimer Cardillo received an M.F.A. from the National School of Fine Arts in Uruguay in 1968, and studied in Germany at the Weissenssee School of Art and Architecture in Berlin and the Leipzig School of Graphic Arts. He has had solo exhibitions throughout Latin America, Europe and the United States and has participated in group exhibitions and important print biennials all over the world, from Europe and the United States to South Africa, and the Far East.  His work is in museums and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, New York; the Chicago Art Institute; the Tate Modern in London; and museums in Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, Norway, and this summer, Budapest, Hungary.

Chace-Randall Gallery is located at 49 Main Street, Andes, NY. Summer Gallery Hours: Thursday - Sunday and Holiday Mondays 11 - 5, and by appointment. For more information call 845.676.4901 or visit www.chacerandallgallery.com.
