Statement:

Art is a process through which I view and attempt to understand myself in relation to the external world. Photography and the figure are the basis of these auto-referential portraits. The figure provides the structure and acts as a screen onto which emotional and psychological forces play themselves out--acting and reacting, reaching and recoiling, writhing and reveling in both pain and ecstasy. The ensuing unconscious gestures are recorded as digital images and used as a basis for encaustic paintings. Wax is additive and subtractive, a push-pull of opposites that echoes the struggling rise to consciousness. Drawing, erasing, re-drawing, scraping, overlaying, incising, building up and pairing down, encapsulating the essence of life. The questions are ancient and universal. The visual responses hopefully resonate with the viewer and reveal the common thread that binds us together in the human experience.
