New Works by Judith Lamb and Marie Vickerilla
Aug 13 - Sep 26
Reception for the Artists: Saturday, Aug 14, 5 - 7 p.m.
Chace-Randall Gallery proudly presents her late summer exhibition: new works by and ,
The exhibition is comprised of still life paintings in oil on board—images of arranged fruits, vegetables, garden flowers and plants juxtaposed with found objects—by Ms. Lamb and abstract works in oil on canvas and linen—plays of light and memory—by Ms. Vickerilla. All works are both gorgeous and slightly edgy, Lamb, a master realist on the periphery of the surreal, and Vickerilla, bold in line, shape and color.
Ms. Lamb, a New Yorker who moved to Delaware County in the early 1980’s has been painting all her life. After experimenting with different styles of painting, she discovered that still life was the perfect vehicle for her temperament. “I love being alone in my studio, juxtaposing found objects that have attracted my eye with fruits and vegetables from my garden,” says the artist, adding that “creating a still-life arrangement is a puzzle. There is a peace and silence in this process that I find therapeutic,” she says. Her still-life process is deeply thought out and acutely felt by the artist. Lamb holds an MFA from Columbia University; her exhibition history includes Chace-Randall Gallery, The Yager Museum, Hartwick College, Oneonta, Meisner SoHo, NYC, and Mrris Gallery, NYC, among others.
Marie Vickerilla received her MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School for the Arts, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson. Her exhibition history includes Kouros Gallery, NYC, Chace-Randall Gallery, Simon Gallery, Morristown, NJ; Park West Gallery, Kingston; the National Juried Show, Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, PA; and Gallery 120, New York City. She won honorable mention in the 1993 National Small Works Exhibition and is the recipient of a NYS Council on the Arts, Decentralized Grant.
Working in paint, graphite, wax, and fabric, Vickerilla begins each piece by making a mark on her surface, covering it up, wiping it away, then working to retrieve part of it back. “Painting runs along a parallel line with life. Every mark put down, rubbed away and brought back is similar to events that happen in our lives, are put in our memory, added up brought back to create who we are,” explains Vickerilla, adding that her process is helped along by time, the materials she uses, her own daily life and the silence of living in the woods. She currently resides in Margaretville, NY.
Chace-Randall Gallery is located at 49 Main Street, Andes, NY. Summer gallery hours: Thursday - Sunday and Holiday Mondays 11-5; and by appointment. For more information please call 845.676.4901 or visit www.chacerandallgallery.com.
