Judith Lamb
new still life paintings in oil
2008
Jun 27- Aug 10
Opening
Reception for the Artist Saturday, Jun 28, 5 - 7 p.m.
This solo exhibition by is comprised of 26 paintings in oil on board--images of
arranged fruits, vegetables, garden flowers and plants juxtaposed
with found objects. The work is both gorgeous and slightly edgy,
masterfully capturing the real, but often overlooked, vitality that
her subjects hold. Ms. Lamb's paintings are much more than thoughtful
renderings of inanimate objects. They are careful studies of what
lies beneath what the eye perceives.
Claude LeSuer, ARTspeak, writes: "Judith
Lamb is a meticulous realist who has the admirable restraint never
to push the visual metaphor too far. She imbues simple fruits and
vegetables with a sense of mystery and foreboding. Her respect for
the simple everyday integrity of her objects makes them all the
more poignant and symbolically potent."
Ms. Lamb, a native New Yorker who moved to Delaware
County in the early 1980's has been painting all her life. After
experimenting with different styles of painting, she discovered
that still life was the perfect vehicle for her temperament. "I
love being alone in my studio, juxtaposing found objects that have
attracted my eye with fruits and vegetables from my garden,"
says the artist, adding that "creating a still-life arrangement
is a puzzle." When the puzzle doesn't work for whatever reason,
Lamb must stop and rearrange the table. "There is a peace and
silence in this process that I find therapeutic," she says.
Her still-life process is deeply thought out and acutely felt by
the artist.
Judith Lamb holds a Master of Fine Arts degree
from Columbia University and has exhibited widely in both New York
City and the Catskills, from the Meisner SoHo Gallery and Salmagundi
to the Yager Museum, Hartwick College, Oneonta and Carrie Haddad
Gallery in Hudson.
