Out of the
Closet
gallery artists
2006 Jan 14 - Feb 14
The Chace-Randall Gallery is "Out of the
Closet" January 14 - February 12, celebrating with wine and
ginger snaps every Saturday afternoon. All those wonderful pieces
of art that you could have only seen upon request, those closeted
in gallery inventory, will proudly take their turn on the wall.
"I have a strong and very select group of
artists who exhibit at Chace-Randall on a regular basis, and I need
to keep inventory. When someone shows special interest in one of
my artists, I love pulling work from the closets, exhibiting each
and every jewel," says gallery owner/director Zoe Randall,
who is well-known for setting work after work along the gallery
floors and usurping a nail or two to show how a particular piece
looks in northern or eastern light--on a grey green or prairie dust
wall. But "Out of the Closet" allows Randall to exhibit
that inventory throughout the gallery, making it available, even,
to those who would never ask.
"So many gallery visitors don't want to
'bother' me by asking to see stored work. They don't realize how
much pleasure it gives me-pulling a piece from the closet and being
able to revisit it, myself," says Randall.
During the Holiday thrust of Chace-Randall's
small works show, larger scale landscapes by Christie Scheele and
Nat Thomas were relegated to the closet, as were earlier and edgier
still life paintings by Judith Lamb. A gorgeous muted landscape
with figure by Inverna Lockpez never found a wall space of its own
until now. Canvas mosaics by Laura Di Nello where exiled to make
way for her small holiday gems. And did you know that museum collected
street photographer Patrick Pagnano painted? Only those who shared
the gallery closet knew-until now.
"I can't build a new wing of the gallery
for each new show, but I can spill the closets onto the walls once
a year," says Randall. The spillage is divine.
